Book Review: Eurotopia

Directory of Intentional Communities and Ecovillages in Europe

The excellent Eurotopia directory of Intentional Communities and Ecovillages in Europe is now available in English. Its 414 pages contains information on 336 intentional communities in Europe, of which (according to the editors):

  • 217 communities regard themselves as ‘ecological’ (67%)
  • 180 are ‘self administered/autonomous’ (55%)
  • 159 engage in gardening/farming/forestry (49%)
  • 138 eat foods from organic production (42%)
  • 134 regard themselves as spiritual (41%)
  • 112 are vegetarian (34%), 25 Vegan (8%)
  • 85 practice self-sufficiency (26%)
  • 62 practice permaculture (19%)
  • 25 describe themselves as feminist (8%)
  • 16 make/desire ‘free love’! (5%)
  • 40 regard themselves as ecovillages.

There are 273 pages on communities, arranged alphabetically according to countries and the first letter of their names. The map at the beginning of each country section offers a rough geographical overview of the communities presented. The information on each of the communities included was provided by the communities themselves, and reflects their own self assessment.

The book also contains some interesting articles on aspects of communal living, history of intentional communities, how to visit projects and even one on communities and ecovillages outside of Europe. There is an extensive resource listing, including addresses of projects in Europe which consider themselves as ecological settlements but not as communities, networks, useful addresses, bibliography and a comprehensive index. All in all, it is a very impressive publication and a bible for all those wishing to visit European intentional communities.
