Aldinga Arts Eco-village

The village and farm is being developed on 34 hectares next to Aldinga, a small township on the coast, 44 km south of Adelaide, South Australia.

Designed using permaculture principles, it aims to meet the specific needs of artists. Galleries, performance space, sculpture court, amphitheatre, studios and tuition rooms are all being designed into the village. These elements will also be open to the wider community and thus provide extra income earning possibilities.

The ecological aspects of the community include:

  • Intensive horticultural development (including small farm leases to residents and others).
  • Organic/bio dynamic application
  • Environmental education centre and courses (as part of public benefit eg taking permaculture and the arts out to the general community. Not just enclosing it in a cloistered environment.)
  • Community gardens
  • Indigenous plant nurseries

Of the 152 sites, 32 plus 12 co-operative rental housing sites have already been ‘bought‘ (Planning approval and approval of the design by the relevant Authority is nearing completion and clear indications are that these will be forthcoming in a few weeks). The planning process and final purchase of the land is expected to be completed by the end of March 2000.

Aldinga Arts Eco-village has found some support from the Bendigo bank. This seems to be a bank that is getting involved in a few community issues, and also appears to have a more human-friendly approach than one expects from banking institutions.
