Ecovillage Design Education

The Ecovillage Design Education (EDE) course is a programme of GEN  partner, Gaia Education.  This curriculum was developed over a number of years by a group of Ecovillage educators from around the world calling themselves GEESE (Global Ecovillage Educators for Sustainable Earth). Launched in Findhorn in 2005, the Ecovillage Design Curriculum is an official contribution to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development - UNDESD 2005-2014.

Gaia Education offers state-of-the-art study guides, training manuals, books, webinars, presentations and a quarterly newsletter to facilitate the delivery of on-line and on-site transformational learning opportunities for community development.

Since 2006, Gaia Education has successfully supported the delivery of more than 190 programmes in 34 countries over 6 continents, reaching thousands of people. Its programmes have been offered in settings ranging from tribal women and traditional communities to children and youth, ecovillages, urban slums, universities and resilience training centers.

Patanga formed from a group of people living in Sydney who purchased the land and formed a company structure (Memorandum of Association) to enable people to live together. The vision was to become a healing community and also to work in cooperation with nature and the land. Two thirds of the community is on mains power, the other is on solar. Cars are used for private transport. The property is a wildlife refuge registered with the Dept. of National Parks and Wildlife. Patanga is certified bio-dynamic. Spirituality is a commonality. Community work days are held each week.

We first started as a spiritual group(Suseonjae). Founded in 1998, we have been doing the breathing practice. Through meditation for a couple of years, we got connected to various beings such as plants, animals, the great nature and even mother earth. The messages from them were all the same. – Humans are also part of nature and our original role was to become guidance of earth. They sadly said they almost lost hope from humans and they are losing faith and love they used to have for humans.

A socially and environmentally responsible, economically viable rural subdivision north of Brisbane (Australia), Crystal Waters was established in 1987. It received the 1996 World Habitat Award (assessed by Dr Wally N’Dow) for its "pioneering work in demonstrating new ways of low impact, sustainable living".

83 freehold residential and 2 commercial lots occupy 20% of the 259ha (640 acre) property. The remaining 80% is the best land, and is owned in common. It can be licensed for sustainable agriculture, forestry, recreation and habitat projects.

Kibbutz Lotan is located in the far South of Israel, 55 km. North of Eilat. It was founded by graduates of the Reform Jewish Youth movements of America and Israel in 1983. The population of the community fluctuates between 150-200 people. "Members" of the cooperative fluctuate between 45-65, with between 40 and 70 children. The community is multi-generational with parents of members living in the community by renting houses as do numerous families who are considering joining.

Bangladesh is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, and according to the IPCC is expected to become even more so as a result of climate change. Floods, cyclones, tornados, and riverbank erosion, often occurring simultaneously, have had an impact on the lives and livelihoods of people living in coastal areas such as the Khulna and Bagerhat Districts of Southern Bangladesh.

VERTIGO Eco Art Village is a center for art and ecology located between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv in Israel's rural Ellah Valley. Tzivon is a small young kibbutz with an ecological vision located in the upper Galilee half way between the Mediterranean coast and the sea of the Galilee. There are about 200 members live in the Seonae-ville. We have six Seonae villes throught Korea and they are all connected to one another.
We have another 200 members outside who live in cities teaching city farming and give lectures on sustainable life.

CityTree - Urban Ecology Community

CityTree is an Urban Ecology Community, with a few hunderd members, six of whom live in our eco-apartment, located in the heart of Tel Aviv. We are practicing a communal life style, and the flat is a showcase for urban sustainability. We experiment with composting, grey water reuse, urban agriculture, and more. We also host workshops and courses that have to do with a wide spectrum of ecology, starting from Raw Vegan classes, through Non-Violent Communication, and on to study groups around alternative economy.

Kaditah is an unrecognized, loosely organized village located in the Galilee of northern Israel. The residents are currently negotiating with the government concerning planned development of the village. Residents are all committed to living on the land and are involved with various ecological lifestyle practices. but there is little co-ordination. The Kaditah ecology center was founded to offer workshops, information and demonstration projects both to residents and to visitors and volunteers.

Roshni Association is an Eastern-Western Community Project in Lahore, Pakistan. Located on the outskirts of Lahore, the Roshni Village is a center where people with and without special needs come together to live and to work. It started work for special persons in 2001, and is currently looking after nearly 50 people with special needs, due to mental retardation and related handicaps. We are providing residential facility to many of our students in our two community houses. The special persons do meaningful work in our workshops, viz.

And there are several interesting places around us, such as Anren ancient town, Confucius International School and a agricultural base. In the ecovillage, living area with green buildings is about 9 acres, and it is surrounded by 40 acres of farmland. The density of buildings here is 39.6%, and the green coverage is 45.9%.

Open days are occasionally held through environmental groups. No facilities for tourism.

Gaia Trust, Denmark is a charitable entity supporting sustainabilty projects around the world. It was founded in 1987 on the initiative of Ross and Hildur Jackson, with the intention of supporting the transition to a sustainable and more spiritual future society through grants and proactive initiatives.

Two NGOs especially have been supported for many years and continue to be supported, namely the Global Ecovillage Network and Gaia Education. Many other smaller projects in the areas of local sustainability initiatives, permaculture, etc. occasionally receive supporting grants.
