Composting Toilet

Composting Toilet

Toilet with internal composting container
A composting toilet is a simple, watersaving and logical alternative to the water closet we know. No need for a water supply, no sewers and no sewage treatment necessary. For me it's even a very practical way to become a part again in the ecological live-cycle of soil-plant-food-digestion-soil. The instructions provided in the instructables link is for a composting toilet with internal composting container. Another solution would be to construct a simpe box with a hole and a lid with a bucket inside. This you could even use inside a house. The contents would then be disposed of on an external composting heap, always being covered up nicely with other material.
Living Roots EcoVillage

Living Roots EcoVillage

Living Roots EcoVillage is located on a beautiful 75 acre farm near Patoka Lake/French Lick/Paoli, IN. This historic farm has 3 barns, a bunkhouse, a community center, more than 10 springs (including a spring house), good fencing, good soil, a pond, forest, and beautiful rolling pastures. In just about 2 years on the new land, we have built three greenhouses, 5 cabins (including an earthen clay-slip, earth bag dome), an 1800 ft. deer fence, farm stand, outdoor kitchen, produce shed, U-Pick strawberry patch, building workshop, walk-in fridge, and earthen grow room.

Solution I: Neem – pesticide Neem seeds soaked in water for 24 hrs to facilitate the removal of seeds. Dried seeds were decorticated and crushed into fine powders and then put in spraying device and use it to spray the plant and the product without fear of any damages. Solar Energy

Solar Energy

Disseminating solar energy in far west villages in DRC. (Luc/GENDRC)

Identify people to train, for stability, women. Train women leaders per village. Create microcredits around the solar project to support sustainability. Install kits with persons empowered.
Regenerative Organic Agriculture

Regenerative Organic Agriculture

The answer is under our feet
Regenerative organic agriculture remove the carbon from the atmosphere and oceans by sequestering it into the soil. It creates humus, made up of the stable, long-lasting remnants of decaying organic material, which expands the soil’s water-holding capacity and improves the fertility of the soil and our ability to grow nutrient-rich crops.
Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting

Worm composting
Worm composting (also called Vermicomposting) is a method for recycling food waste into a rich, dark, earth-smelling soil conditioner. The great advantage of worm composting is that this can be done indoors and outdoors, thus allowing year round composting. It also provides apartment dwellers with a means of composting. In a nutshell, worm compost is made in a container filled with moistened bedding and redworms. Add your food waste for a period of time, and the worms and micro-organisms will eventually convert the entire contents into rich compost. In ideal conditions worms can eat at least their own weight of organic matter in a day and their casts are supremely beneficial to plant growth.
Intercropping

Intercropping

Mixing it up with your crops
Intercropping offers farmers the opportunity to engage nature's principle of diversity on their farms and have the following advantages: Benefits of intercropping are crop yield, productivity of various plant constituents, economic return, yield stability, social benefits, pest control, and nutrient use efficiency. Furthermore, because of some favorable exudates from the component legumes, greater land-use efficiency, greater yield stability and increased competitive ability towards weed, intercropping is advantageous over mono-cropping.
Hugelkultur

Hugelkultur

Hügelkultur is making raised garden beds made of and covered with organic material for cropping. It has several advantages: The first few years, the composting process will slightly warm your soil giving you a slightly longer growing season. The organic material will also shrinks inside the garden beds, making more tiny air so there is no need for tilling. As the years pass, the organic material keeps nutrient excess from passing into the ground water and refeeds that to the garden plants later: That makes the soil of the raised garden bed incredibly rich and loaded with soil life. Besides, it holds a lot of water so hugelkultur can be part of a system for growing garden crops in dry areas with few – or no – irrigation. Passing from 2D to 3D increases the cropping surface as well and enables different micro-climats in the garden bed so it is possible to have more diversity. Last but not least, it allows to avoid bending down…
Earthship Biotecture

Earthship Biotecture

Building radically sustainable buildings
Earthship use solar power and carbon-zero technology and are made of natural and recycled materials. It integrates all elements with food production to assure a minimal reliance on public utilities and fossil fuels. It can be modified for almost any climate and comes in many sizes. It can also come in custom sizes. It has been built enough times that it has become a well oiled machine both in terms of performance and production. Biotecture, based in Taos, New Mexico commercialize it. It costs around $230 per sf. The construction drawings range from $5,000 to $10,000 depending on size. Most models can be built by their crew in one month anywhere in the world. In this scenario you must add travel and accommodations for the crew. Of course our drawings are aimed at owner builders doing this themselves as well. This can cut costs by close to 40%.
No Till Gardening

No Till Gardening

Avoiding soil degradation
The benefits of no-till gardening are therefore numerous: it promotes natural aeration and drainage, it saves water, reduces or eliminates the need to weed, it saves time and energy, it builds earthworm population and helps to reduce the soil erosion and to retain carbon. No-till gardening requires some experimenting to find the right techniques for each growing region but oneself can find a good documentation about how to apply principles of no-till gardening (Preparing the bed before adopting the no-till method, using mulch liberally, in layers; when planting seedlings, pull the mulch back and dig into the surface just enough to set the plant; cuting back on watering; covering cropswith hay in the winter; avoiding compacting the soil etc.)
