Planning began in 2006 to establish a sustainable settlement for at least 50 families. The driver was a shared concern for the dramatic changes coming from climate chaos and energy descent. Our design considerations have taken these emerging processes into account.
Atamai is based on a traditional village design and enhanced by permaculture principles. We have overengineered much of the infrastructure to provide the necessary resilience for what is coming.
Freehold titles are available on the 120 ha of land we have acquired, most of which is reserved for Commons. Local council has already approved 40 titles for development. Nine titles have been developed and adjacent land has been purchased with existing housing.
An orchard has been established on the Commons, as well as ponds for irrigation and recreation, utility trees have been planted, and a community garden established. A cycle path connects much of the village area. Our farm operation is producing vegetables, raising chickens and providing eggs and meat, and raising sheep and the start of our dairly herd.
A pine plantation on the land is being converted to a sustainable forestry operation.
The Commons is owned and managed collectively by all villagers using a consensus decision process since 2010.
The first new house has been built to Atamai Building Guideline standards. It is very comfortable to live in and has almost no operating costs. It is a passive solar design, provides its own energy and water, and manages its own wastes.
Several jobs have been created within the village and we currently have more livelihood opportunities than we have people.
Sections are being sold at market prices, and what would normally be the developer's profit is being reinvested in the Commons.
